*** REVIEW *** DREAM a Rosewood Bay novel by Carly Phillips

dream

Synopsis

She was his best friend, his first love. And she broke his heart. Now she’s back. Will they find a second chance?

As a little girl, Andrea Harmon wanted to marry a prince, and Kyle Davenport hoped it would be him. But he never told her how he felt, and lost her as a result. Because sometimes the bad guy gets the girl. And Kyle left town to get over her.

Andi made the wrong choice years ago, choosing the bad boy over the best friend she trusted and she paid for it every day since.
Coming face to face with his former best friend was bound to happen once he moved back to Rosewood Bay, but for Kyle, becoming her son’s new teacher is a painful reminder of what they never had. But this time around, Kyle is determined to change their ending. Prince Charming is determined to break down her walls.

Except that no happily-ever-after is won without a fight—and her ex-husband doesn’t like to lose.

Sharon's review

Dream by Carly Phillips is the fourth book in the Rosewood Bay series.  It is Andi Harmon’s story.  Andi and her son Nicky are ancillary characters in the previous three books.  Because I know a little of their backstory, I came to Dream wanting to know more.

Andi is a single, independent mom.  She left a physically and emotionally abusive marriage.  Her brother, Kane, helps with Nicky whenever he can.  They want to make sure that Nicky has a positive male influence in his life.

Kyle Davenport is back in Rosewood working as a teacher.   He is Andi’s childhood friend and her first love.   One of his students is Nicky.  Andi is forced to interact with him regularly.  He is angry with Andi because of past events.  Gradually they learn how to work on Nicky’s problems at school together.

Dream answers most of the questions about Andi’s past.  Billy, the ex, comes back to town also.  Kyle and Billy are the exact opposites depicting the good and evil.  Kyle slowly exposes Andi to a life she deserves; something stable and loving and he intends to give it to her.  They made too many mistakes in their youth, and he isn’t going to let it happen again.

The characters from the other three books make an appearance with updates on their life.  These characters also offer support when Andi needs it.  I like this series.  The family has a close relationship which comes in play when Andi worries about her ex and threats he makes.  They also support her as the relationship with Kyle grows.  I love all the original characters of the series.

I recommend the Rosewood Bay series.  Each book is a standalone novel with interconnected characters.   Dream is in the alternating points of view of Andi and Kyle.  There is a little angst, but it isn’t overwhelming.  The book is well written and moves at a decent pace.

As an aside, Carly does an excellent job developing strong women faced with real-life situations that can bring a lesser woman down.  Each heroine in the series has a unique character with a different burden to work through.  Like all Phillips books, I enjoy reading this series. I’m not sure if there are any more books planned, but I would like a book that deals with Andi and Kane’s father.  He is still in turmoil and needs to get his addiction under control.

**5.5 STAR REVIEW** TWISTED ~ Tangled Web Series #1 by Aleatha Romig

The underworld of Chicago is far from forgiving. It’s a
world where knowledge means power, power money, and money everything.

While I paid the ultimate price to have it all, it wasn’t my
decision to give up my life.
That doesn’t mean I ceased to exist, only to live.
Going where the job takes me and living in the shadows, with
deadly accuracy I utilize the skills inherent to me, not knowing from where
they came, not recalling what I’d lost.
And then I saw her.
Laurel Carlson.
I shouldn’t want her, desire her, or need her, yet with each
sighting I know she is exactly what I have to have. Laurel has the ability to
do what I thought was impossible. She sees what others don’t.
My gut tells me that it’s a deadly mistake to change my
plans and open my world to her. My mind says she’ll be repulsed by my twisted
existence.
None of that matters, because my body won’t take no for an
answer.
I’ve made dangerous mistakes before.
This time, will the price be too high?
From New York Times bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a
brand-new dark romance bringing us back to the same dangerous underworld as
SECRETS. You do not need to read the Web of Sin trilogy to get caught in this
new and intriguing saga, Tangled Web.
TWISTED is book one of the TANGLED WEB trilogy which will
continue in OBSESSED and conclude in BOUND.

Sheena's Review

Twisted by Aleatha Romig

What a ride! this book has everything you could ever imagine from Aleatha Romig.

The intensity of this book was tangible, my pulse would race and then I would have to take a deep breath and take a step back while it eased that is how good this story was and how enticing it was to read.

Kader is a powerful man, his mannerisms, his look; his whole being just screams power.  At first I was not sure if he was a good or bad guy and to be honest I still can’t tell, however, what I can say is that the mystery behind him keeps you reading and constantly on your nerves as to what will happen next.

I do like Kader, for all his mystery there is something about him that draws me to him, maybe it is because he is mysterious or maybe because he has that bad boy attitude but there is something I like about him.

“I was mesmerized.  Her blue eyes stared at the camera, staring at me through the screen – seeing me in a way that even I was incapable of doing”

This showed me a vulnerable side of Kader that made me believe he was human and capable of feelings.

Laurel is a great character, maybe a bit naive in her way of thinking but let’s face is some of us are when it comes to people we care about and respect.  No matter what she is dealing with, she is strong enough to do what needs to be done and is a very determined woman.  I do feel that she is in a position that she didn’t want but she is trying to do the best she can and figure out what is going on.

“I’d felt safe with him, but now I didn’t know exactly what I was feeling”

I loved this quote as it summed up exactly what the book is like, it is Twisted.  One moment Laurel feels safe, next moment she is scared.

Aleatha as normal has done an amazing dark, twisted book.  She has kept me on my toes from page one, not knowing right from wrong.

A master of mystery and deception is Aleatha and I love it.

*** REVIEW AN OLDIE BUT A GOODIE *** GABRIEL’S ANGEL by Nora Roberts

Gabriels angel

AVAILABLE FROM ALL BOOK SELLERS

Sharon's review

I have a project to read books that I purchased some time ago and haven’t yet. There are a lot! This weekend I read a shorter novel by Nora Roberts titled Gabriel’s Angel. I liked it.

Gabriel’s Angel is a study of two people hurting because of a loss and a need to hide. Gabriel Bradley is a successful painter, in pain because of a death. The death is so heavy on his heart that he can’t find inspiration to paint. He escapes to a cabin in the Colorado mountains about an hour from people.

Laura Malone is on the run. Her abusive husband died in a car with his mistress. When Laura discovers that she is pregnant, her wealthy in-laws tell her that they are going to take her child. Her fear starts her running to Colorado, where she almost crashes into Gabe during a snowstorm.

I like the instant connection and the way this couple helps each other deal with the pain of their past. As Laura shares her story and her present struggle, Gabe needs to help her. The more they share their pain, Gabe finds his muse and begins to paint again. There are so many beautiful scenes with Laura and Gabe, Laura and the Bradley’s, and Gabe and the baby. There are hurdles that they both have to work out. Their journey isn’t an easy one as they find that love can help them both find the footing to go forward.

I’ll start with this book is from the 1980s when readers didn’t find fault as much as today. I’m from that era not a person who reads a book and picks a character apart. I can see where some, mostly younger, readers will need to do a hand wave or two. Those hand waves don’t take away from the story for me. For me, the journey is engaging and an enjoyable read. I love the characters. At times the tension made me nervous, angry or wanting more. There are also times that I want to see a little depth, especially with Gabe’s art agent. Also, the ending isn’t what I expect from Nora Roberts; I feel like a little more at the end or an epilogue would make the story better. I can see how Robert’s changed. Regardless, Gabriel’s Angel is a good story. I will check for a sale of the audio and listen again in the future.

*** 5 STAR REVIEW *** THE BILLIONAIRE BOSS NEXT DOOR by Max Monroe

TBBND - RB banner

The Billionaire Boss Next Door, an all-new hilarious romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is available now!

Boss-next-door-(Cover)

My new boss has it all. In spades.

Gorgeous green eyes? Check.

Hard-and-sexy body? Check.

Intelligence? Check.

Success? A big fat billionaire… Check.

Too bad I haven’t started out on the best foot.

My big mouth has already turned him against me, and tempting good looks and success aside, Trent Turner is no peach either. He’s stubborn and thick-headed, and son of a fruitcake, he thinks he knows everything there is to know about the hotel business.

With him running the development of the new Vanderturn New Orleans Hotel and me doing the design, our work relationship is far too intimate for two people who absolutely despise one another.

But that’s not all.

See, he isn’t just my billionaire boss from hell. He’s my new neighbor, too.

Same city.

Same building.

Same floor.

Trent Turner is my billionaire boss next door.

Holy moly, let’s hope my career—and hormones—can survive.

Disclaimer: If you generally love to suffer, hate fun of any kind, and are allergic to laughter, this book is not for you.

Sharon's review

The Billionaire Boss Next Door is a laugh out loud romantic comedy that follows two characters from enemies to friends to lovers.  It is a slow-burn as most of the book has these two navigating a working relationship.  There is an attraction out of the gate, but their personalities make them lock horns.

I love the characters.  Greer is a strong, determined woman with a loving heart.  She tries desperately to tap down her snarky, sarcastic, sometimes bitchy behavior to land a job as the designer of the new Turner Properties’ hotel in New Orleans that is scheduled to open in nine months.  Her name attached to a successful project will put her company on the map.  However, her first meeting with the project manager and son of the owner doesn’t go well.

Trent is a sweetheart, who puts on an abrasive, critical demeanor as he manages the new hotel project.  He is frustrated that his father doesn’t trust him enough to put his team together.  In fact, his father isn’t sure that Trent can take over and successfully run Trent Properties which he makes known to Trent often.   It is Trent senior who put Greer in charge of the hotel design and sets up an uncomfortable and hilarious relationship.

I love the ancillary characters too.  They are the perfect complement to this couple.  Anyone who read the other books in the series (I haven’t but will shortly) will know them.  They are instrumental in setting up some of the best scenes in the story.

I’m not a big fan of Billionaire romance themes normally.  The Billionaire Boss Next Door is different.   The characters are facing everyday problems that we all must navigate.  The story is developed nicely and in a way that made me laugh like a fool.  A couple of times, I laughed so hard tears were streaming down my face.  This book is recommended highly for anyone who loves a good, deep belly laugh.  Honestly, who doesn’t need love and laughter in their life?

I’m Hailey Anne Monroe. I’m twenty-eight years old. An artist, who found her muse on the canvas because I wasn’t allowed to have friends or even keep a journal. And yes, if you haven’t guessed by now, I’m that Hailey Anne Monroe, daughter to Thomas Frank Monroe, the man who was a half-percentage point from becoming President of the United States. If you were able to ask him, he’d probably tell you that I was the half point. But you can’t ask him, and he can’t tell you. He’s dead. They’re all dead and now I can speak.

Sharon's review

When I see Lisa Renee Jones as the author of a book, the Inside Out series is my first thought.  A Perfect Lie is nothing like that series.  Well, that is not precisely true… as both contain anxious moments and mysteries to solve.

A Perfect Lie, in my opinion, leans more toward the thriller/mystery than the other books I read by this author.  Hailey Anne Monroe is an artist.  She is also telling her own story the way she wants to tell it.  Ms. Jones uses chapters explaining Hailey’s past mixed with the present to give the reader bits and pieces of the puzzle that is Hailey’s life.

a PERFECT LIE TEASER 1

Hailey is in the public’s eye because of her father’s political ambitions.  Her father wants to be president more than he wants to be a father Because of this, he treats his daughter as a tool more than a human being. There are so many secrets that surround Hailey, and her father wants them buried.  As the story progresses, clues are given to the reader by Hailey.  We find out that very few people are who she thinks they are and fewer yet can be trusted.

A perfect lie teaser 2

A Perfect Lie is a real dark mystery.  I was on a story roller coaster from beginning to end.  Lisa Renee Jones use of past and present to tell Hailey’s story is executed perfectly.  The anxiety in the pit of my stomach was real.  It kept me on the edge of my seat, turning the pages to find out what happens next.

The only negative for me only is that some of the questions in my mind are not resolved.  I believe that is the author’s intent.  She wants the reader to be a part of the story and fill in those blanks. I’m not a fan of that technique.  However, it isn’t that big a deal as the story is too good otherwise to put me off.   I highly recommend A Perfect Lie to all my mystery-loving friends.  It is a page-turner from start to finish.

MINI-EXCERPT:
His hands settle on my shoulders, and the touch is not sexual at all. It’s grounding. It brings me down a notch, which is clearly his intent, but he doesn’t hold back. “I can’t prove that he did it, but the minute I headed that direction with my investigation, I was shut out.”
“And yet you covered for me, or so you say.”
“I made an effort to prevent you from becoming a fall guy,” he confirms. “If your he did this, he needs to own this, not you.”
Not me.
“You know I don’t remember that night,” I point out, needing to know everything. Needing to know where this is headed.
“I know you called him and confronted him about her.”
“How? How do you know that?”
His lips set hard. “I know.”
“And yet those photos are supposed to mean something to me.”
“We both know those photos are trouble for him,” he counters.
I’m back to the confirmation that I called him. I stoked the fires. I made her a problem for him. “Just to be clear,” I say, “you don’t believe the homeless man did it.” It’s not a question.
“No,” he says. “I do not.”
No, he does not.
“Which brings me back to you,” he says, and with those words, my throat starts to close off. This is where everything lands. He’s stripped me naked to play with my head. He’s baited me, reeled me in and I invited him here to do it. I’m a fool and this is where it all ends.

Sheena's Review

Heartfelt

The 3rd book in the Hart’s Boardwalk series by Samantha Young.  This one concentrates on Dahlia and is an amazing story of second chance love.

Although this story is sent in the here and now, it does go back and forward to her past so you get an insight into what she dealt with then and some insight into how she deals with everything now.

Dahlia owns her own gift store and is extremely talented when it comes to designing jewellery.  She moved from Boston to start her life over, to make a new fresh start.  Here she has made some amazing friends and is happy here, she loves her life, the place she is settled.

Things take a turn though when Dahlia receives some news from home, and makes the decision to return home and face things she has avoided for so long.

Needless to say that going home for Dahlia means dealing with emotions that she has put aside for so long, it also gives her the time to have a honest discussion with her family after so long.  It was never going to be easy going home and she knows that but it was cathartic and a good way for her to close any wounds that were still open before she returned to Hartwell.

Although she has her friends, her business in Hartwell she is still lonely and she doubts if she will ever give her heart fully to anyone else and she realised that on her return to Boston where she spent some time with Michael, her one true love whom she will never forget or probably ever get over.

Can Dahlia find love again, well I can say yes to this but you have to read the book to find out how this happens and where Dahlia goes from here onwards.

This story deals with so much, it tugs at your heart strings, well it did mine, it makes you feel everything Dahlia is feeling and the characters feel so real to life it is a wonderful story.

The love and pain that went into writing this story is so evident throughout that you just don’t want to put the book down.

Another MUST read by Samantha Young.

When Killian Brody showed up at Dallas Faircloth’s work with news that her half-brother might die without her help, she never expected the oldest and sexiest Brody to freaking kidnap her to ensure her cooperation.
The scandalous affair between Dallas’s mother and Killian’s father made everything inside Dallas revolt at the Brody name. It was because of a Brody that her life had been left in ruins at the age of eight, and she’d had to rebuild all on her own. She hated the Brodys. Which was too bad, really. Killian Brody was take-charge, arrogant and so damn sexy she would have climbed him like a tree if it weren’t for that last name of his.

Her weak-willed mother had proven to her that the men in the Brody family were as addictive as any drug, and Dallas didn’t want to get hooked. But when Killian turns his sights on her and makes her believe she’s his greatest weakness, she has a choice—play it safe, or dive in headfirst and risk falling in love with a Brody man.

I looked like every other red-blooded male in this room now, but hell if I could stop the reaction to what I saw.
A woman.
But not just any woman.
The most gorgeous woman I’d ever laid eyes on, and God knew how many I’d laid eyes—and hands—on. Her long, dark hair fell in waves down her back. She wore a tight pencil skirt that showed every mouthwatering curve that a woman could have. Long, tanned, toned legs led to five-inch black heels, the kind that men envisioned women leaving on during sex.
Once I had forced my eyes off her legs, I took in the silk blouse she wore, the way it hugged her full breasts just so, and I almost groaned. In the low light of the bar, I caught a hint of lace underneath her shirt. She turned her head, as if she felt our gaze, and my breath caught. She had the face of an angel, with large doe-like eyes, high cheekbones, and full, red lips. She made Stacie, our waitress, look like a little girl. She shifted her gaze back to the bartender, who was practically tripping over himself to serve her. It looked like she was alone, but if it was up to every single straight man in this place, she wouldn’t be for long.
I was up and off my barstool and headed her way before I could even second-guess why.

This dating experiment is about to go viral…

Jameson

When my eight-year-old son starts asking question about love, I decide to use a magazine article on how to woo a woman to prove, once and for all, that romantic love doesn’t exist. Companionship, habit, mild fondness, sure, but not that thing called love. I have my hypothesis ready and I’m dead set on experimenting on my new neighbor, the single mom who does the weirdest things.

But my experiment goes awry in unexplainable ways…

Lily-Marie

When dating apps fail me spectacularly, I decide to go old school and use a 1950s magazine I dug up at a yard sale to help find Mr. Right.

Fifty Ways to Find a Husband.

Sounds legit.

Problem is, my new neighbor, Mr. Science Professor, keeps blocking my attempts. And keeps losing his shirt. How does a book nerd have so many muscles anyway? Thing is, my kids like his son and we start spending a lot of time together, which is distracting me from my ultimate goal: to find a husband to sweep me off my feet and be a good father to my kids.

Things get comical quick when my best friend records everything in her daily newspaper column. I can’t help but wonder if single moms like me can actually catch a husband. Or will this Mom-Com go viral as an epic train wreck?

He’s sexy without being an arrogant ass.

What more can a girl ask for? In my dark world I need more. I have a need most can’t fill. I demand certain expectations that have guys cupping their balls and running in the other direction. Yes, I’m broken but I refuse to part with the little bit that’s left of me.

Prologue – Desirae

My birthday is in three days! Just three days! In three days, I will be fourteen! A lot’s happening for me this year. I’m entering ninth grade. The boys will finally notice me because I have an awesome rack. At least that’s what they say. I’ve heard them whisper it to each other. The morons forget to close their mouths and turn when I look their way. They’re too lost in my perky tits. But I don’t mind. This year I’ll be damned if they tease me about my freckles. This year I won’t be boyfriend-less. This is my year.

Daddy has another of his business functions tonight. I know we live in like a freaking mansion, but I don’t understand why he always throws his parties here. It makes Mother extra OCD and the staff mean as hell. But I’ll suffer through tonight because in a few nights Daddy is throwing me a party! The house will be filled with my friends and anyone else who wants to enviously join. I might throw them out. Or I might let them stay so they can tell all their friends how effin’ awesome my party was. Decisions… Decisions…

But first I must get through tonight. Daddy’s functions are so stuffy and rarely have kids my age in them. I prefer to be the only non-adult in the place. Usually when someone comes with their parents they’re absolute shitheads about everything. They act all stuck up like this is their place and they’re too good to even look my way. Humph. Don’t even care if one of them attends tonight. Can’t ruin my mojo. I’m in my happy place. Only three days!

Janet enters my room from the servant’s entrance. I scowl in disapproval. She knows that’s my pet peeve. They all still must knock like they would if they were entering Mother and Daddy’s room. Janet curls her lip. She doesn’t think much of me. I’ve never really done anything to sway her one way or another, but it does bother me some. Why do the servants of this place act so hostile? If I was a spoiled brat, I’d totally understand but I’m not. No really, I’m not. I try to do and get things without their assistance. I’m self-sufficient considering my parents globe trot without me all the time. I’m alone so often that I don’t even expect anything from anyone during Christmas.

“Your Father has provided you this dress to wear for the evening Miss Desirae. I trust you can get yourself ready before the main course.” She places a white dress on my bed then stalks out of the room as if it had been me who’d inconveniently summoned her. Seriously, what is it with these people? And since when does Daddy dictate what I wear to his parties? I have a specific section in my massive closet dedicated to clothes that are approved by Mother.

My eyes travel over the dress. It really surprises me to see something so simple yet sassy resting before me. The white dress and cute bow in the front scream innocence but the strapless top and short length whisper young woman. I’m not sure which role Daddy wants me to present more tonight. I need to balance both sides carefully until he communicates his expectations. Daddy always has an agenda. He’ll whisper the plan to Mother and she executes to a tee. I haven’t always liked what he’s instructed her to do but Mother always obliges and never complains which means I must do the same.

The white satin material softly kisses my skin as I shimmy into it. The sweetheart neckline makes my boobs pop out. I try pushing them back in, but the dress is too tight at the waist. The large bow only calls out more attention to my girls spilling out. I would’ve never picked something like this for myself. I know my limitations with my freckled skin and busty chest. I try not to cringe. I really do… but the dress barely covers my ass. Forget innocent. This is borderline trashy-cute. My foot taps nervously as I stare at the girl in the mirror. Am I really going to wear something like this out of this room?

I grab the house phone not caring if they whisper about me. The phone makes several clicking sounds before someone answers.

“Yes” Janet barks into the phone. Does she know it’s me calling? What if she’d answered the phone to Daddy or Mother like that? She wouldn’t be working here for long if that was the case!

“Did Daddy offer any alternatives? This dress is a bit short.” I hate the way my voice quivers a bit at the end, but the truth is that I feel immensely self-conscious in this dress. There will be grown men mingling with Daddy and Mother. I don’t like the way they stare at me sometimes. This dress will only make things worse.

“Your Father is already on his way up to see you” Janet haughtily replies, “I suggest you finalize whatever else you have left to do.” She doesn’t wait for my reply. She just hangs up on me.

My shoulders droop. Can I even sit in this dress without revealing too much thigh or cleavage? Mother is going to throw a fit! She hates it whenever someone else gets more attention than she does. I scurry into the bathroom tying my hair up into an elegant knot with loose tendrils falling onto my shoulders. Mother says men always love a woman with a few loose strands. It shows her quiet wild streak while screaming self-control.

Makeup takes a little longer to do. I begrudgingly apply concealer because Mother balks at my attempt with sheer foundation. The sheer foundation blends with my skin but still shows some of my freckles while the concealer makes me look like I have an entirely new face. I like my freckles but apparently no one in high society does.

“There you are” Daddy stalks into my room without knocking. I smile politely at him glad that I’d put on the dress first and did my hair and makeup afterwards. This order only spells disaster but Daddy’s walked in on me, in only bra and panties, on one too many occasions. Now that I’m turning fourteen, I promised myself since I can’t lock the door that I would dress first no matter what. Daddy’s carelessly flung comment about me needing to work out more because I’m becoming too curvy and soft in unattractive parts not only hurt but I burned with humiliation for days afterwards. Why was he looking at me like that anyways?

“You appear presentable” he states in his businesslike tone. I inhale slowly, deeply; knowing tonight is all business and no fun. I won’t be able to get away early and go to sleep. Daddy will show me off like he does Mother and all his other worldly possessions.

“Thank you” I reply knowing he expects it, “Where would you like me this evening?”

“I want you to meet some special people tonight. I expect you to be on your best behavior and assist me with finalizing the contract. This is the one I’ve been working on for over a year. Your Mother’s tried to win him over, but she’s been unsuccessful in her endeavor. I expect you to shine like a diamond tonight.”

“Of course, Daddy” I smile. It hurts like hell to keep up the fake expression plastered on my face, but my night is only just beginning. Guess there is no other choice regarding my dress.

Daddy holds his arm out expecting me to loop mine into his like a perfect young lady would. I pull my shoulders back, straighten my spine, and hold my head high knowing that the moment we step down those stairs all eyes will be on us. Daddy expects perfection from me in all areas of my life; from academics, extracurricular activities, community service, and right down to the prized only-child role.

We’ve barely descended halfway down the stairs when my body wants to scream mutiny. I’ve learned to trust my instincts. My heart hammers violently against my ribcage, my fingers close into a fist against my thigh, but no one will see or notice these things. My gaze remains forward, my breathing even and under control. This indifference is what I’ve been taught all my life. I look around until I find the source of my unease; an older man with salt and pepper hair, light facial hair, and great taste in designer suits. If my eyes aren’t deceiving me, he’s wearing a Canali wool twill suit that puts almost every other gentleman’s attire to shame.

“Mr. Pearce” Daddy greets the intimidating man. People give this man a wide berth. His gaze alone can cause heart failure. “I’d like you to meet my daughter, Desirae.”

Although this isn’t the right moment, it’s nice to hear the slight tremble in Daddy’s voice. This man makes him nervous. Daddy mentioned he’d been trying to woo him for a while now but how much is at stake? Is Daddy at risk of losing something or does this man have that much to offer?

“Exquisite” Mr. Pearce replies. His eyes peruse every inch of my body. I stare at the floor unable to meet his gaze. This man sees too much. He paralyzes with just a look from his black eyes. I kid you not. The man’s eyes are all black, no iris color; all pupils.

“Does she meet your approval sir?” Daddy asks him. He shifts side-to-side while Mr. Pearce slowly walks around us. Why does Daddy care if I meet the man’s approval?

“And you’re absolutely certain she’s untouched?” His deadly voice makes my blood turn cold. I look at Daddy panicked at what they’re discussing. We’ve barely made it to the bottom of the stairs before this man pounced. Mother has everyone corralled in the main area but she’s watching for us from a distance. The one time I need her to make eye contact with me and she’s busy playing hostess to the other guests.

“The paperwork I provided you is legitimate. Hymen intact. Pure.” Daddy replies.

Bile shoots up my throat like an out of control roller coaster. I take small even breaths trying to appear unaffected. I can’t vomit in front of this man. I can’t pass out either! Hymen. I should know that word. Something niggles at the back of my mind, but I can’t quite place it. This conversation is important.

“If everything is as you say” Mr. Pearce steps closer. “Then the executed contract will be delivered to you first thing tomorrow morning and your application to Champion’s will be approved.”

“Thank you” Daddy breathes with relief. He pushes me toward Mr. Pearce. “Do everything he says. I expect your obedience and utter perfection.”

“If she’s worthwhile, I will make her a repeat and reward you with each satisfactory union.” Mr. Pearce adds. “Of course, that isn’t in our original agreement and I’ll decide what the form of payment will be each time afterwards… but I’m usually a good judge of the finer things.” He eyes my body from head to toe once again but doesn’t complete his sentence.

I see dots dance in front of my face before a painful pinch to my inner arm snaps me out of my fainting spell. “You will not pass out.” Daddy hisses in my ear.

Mr. Pearce escorts me to one of the guest rooms on the second level of a place I used to consider safe. Mother watches him take me away. I’m terrified and in shock while Mother appears angry and ousted.

“Don’t mind her” Mr. Pearce motions towards Mother “She’s upset more with herself than with you. She doesn’t have the stamina and drive like I know you will. She envies your youth and beauty. We’re going to have so much fun together.”

Each word flays me. They know exactly what’s going to happen, but they failed to let me in on the plan. Something bad is about to happen, with their consent. I numbly enter the room. I shouldn’t be in here alone with him, but my parents have allowed it. My mind screams to shut off. Be a good girl; be Daddy’s perfect girl…

Gritty star-crossed lovers? You have no idea . . .
ANGEL
I thought I knew bad times. The worst times. My dad murdered, the MC that’s rightfully mine ripped apart by corrupt rule. I didn’t know anything about true horror until I met a Tennessean girl named Mercy.
Angel and Mercy, frigging ironic, right? You don’t know the half of it. Blood Legion MC is my legacy, and revenge against me is Mercy’s. If you’re looking for gritty star-crossed lovers in the Crescent City, you’ve found it. Because there’s a damn good chance one of us won’t make it out of here alive.

I’m at the mercy of my menfolk. Mercy . . . ironic, isn’t it? Because my cousin and my uncle show no mercy to me, despite my name. I’m used against my will. I’m beaten and worse when I don’t behave. I have no freedom, only one friend, and no chance of escape even though New Orleans is so vibrant I feel like I could touch the colors.
I fled the compound for just one night. I shouldn’t have. I met a biker called Angel—Angel. He’s blond as a seraph, but big and tall and full of sweet talk I’ve never heard before. Except he’s my family’s enemy.

EXCERPT

“Hey, Angel! You got a live one there?” A man with tons of chunky silver rings on his fingers yelled over to our quiet corner.

“Fuck. Off. Saint,” Angel replied, swiping him the middle finger without even looking.

“Saint?” I asked, lips curling together. “And Angel.”

Angel winked. “And don’t forget Mercy. Must be destined, oui?”I smothered a smile, taking another long drink of my beer. “Well, I don’t think he’s a saint or you’re an angel. Not by the way those pretty ladies looked like they were competing for your company earlier.”

“You saw that?” Groaning, he rubbed a hand down his cheek. Then his face lit up from the inside. “So you were watching me just as much as I was watching you.”

I couldn’t help but laugh as he gloated.

Then I pressed my palm against his chest and lifted up to the toes of my boots to whisper against his jaw, “I was waiting to see if you’d get your eyes gouged out.”

He laughed loudly, tipping his head back so his gold curls shimmered.

I snickered, draining the rest of my beer.

“Buy you another?” His arm ringed around my waist.

And alarm bells went off.

I wrestled free, quickly checking the time on my watch.

Almost midnight.

“I have to go.” I slammed my bottle onto the nearest table.

“Didn’t mean to scare you off, Mercy.” Angel stepped in front of me as I waded to the door.

He held his hands raised in front of him.

I dodged around him, fleeing like I should have done an hour ago.

Running down the sidewalk, I tripped on the uneven pavement in my over-sized boots.

A strong arm banded around my waist, drawing me up and steadying me.

“Got you, beb.”

Puffs of breath pelted against my ear, and then Angel released me from his grasp.

He spun me gently around, his hair like a halo lit by the streetlight. “At least let me give you a ride. Where you headed?”

I shook my head. “I just need to go. Please.”

I got the feeling Angel L’Esperance didn’t chase just anyone. But I couldn’t let him get close to me. I didn’t want him knowing where I lived.

Shame and embarrassment bled into one big ball of regret.

His fingers came up to tenderly caress my cheek.

The first touch on my skin from a male that didn’t make me flinch or quake or want to crawl away in fear.

“Can I at least get a kiss?”

My heart leaped.

Angel didn’t pose a threat. How could he, with a name like that and sincerity shining in his clear blue eyes?

Even more, he’d easily tunneled beneath years of distrust and hurt . . . in mere minutes.

“Yes,” I whispered.

He closed his eyes. He hummed a deep rumbling sound. He bent his burnished head over mine, and seconds later the softest, most pleasurable sensation melted against my mouth. His tongue took a trip across the seam of my lips, sailing to a stop before he plucked my bottom lip between both of his.

When he drew back, I swore I could read dreams in his eyes.

It wasn’t a kiss. It was a promise. It tasted like hope.

Hope I couldn’t afford.

Oh lord.

“How about your number, Miss Mercy?”

Hope became cinders in my mouth. “I don’t think so.”

Threading his fingers through his hair, he tousled the strands even more. “At least let me put my number in your phone.”

“I don’t have a cell phone.” Another thing I wasn’t allowed.

He frowned heavily at me before grasping my hand and squeezing it. “Wait here.”

He raced back to the bar, and I knew I should leave while I could.

But my lips tingled. I pressed my fingers against my mouth, remembering the firm warm pressure.

I wasn’t going to make it back to the Lair in time.

Half a minute later, Angel ran back to me. His grin didn’t make it to his eyes that time. He stuffed a napkin in my pocket.

“My number. Call me.”

“Why?”

He laughed curtly. “Whaddya mean why? I wanna see you again, Mercy.” Gathering my hands in his, he asked, “You sure I can’t give you a ride?”

“I have to go. I have to go now.”

“Okay.” He released me. “Okay.”

I turned away from him, pulling the napkin out to crush it in my hand. To hold it in my hand.

Dashing away tears that came from the deep hidden well within, I sprinted. I looked back once, and Angel still watched. He watched until I was out of sight.

I tried to keep my bearings. I hoped I got home before my kinfolk. Because something bad would happen if they found me missing.
